The function of a water softening system is to remove the ions that cause scum from the water by ion exchange. Depending on the installation conditions and water quality, a mechanical cleaning filter can also be added. In this way, the water is completely freed from large substances and debris. In order to bring the water to the drinking level, a reverse osmosis (membrane) technology water filter should be applied. Although the water coming out of the softening system is cleaner and lighter than the previous water, it is not considered fully potable.

Devices designed for the kitchen are mainly equipped with membranes with a capacity of 75-80 GPD. These membranes are capable of purifying up to 200-250 liters of water per day. But after the device's tank is full, the membrane stops the water purification process. Every time the user opens the faucet and uses a certain amount of water, the device automatically starts, fills the tank and stops.

The update time varies depending on the function and type of filter. 3 pre-filters usually need to be renewed after 6, 9, 12 months, membrane after 18, 24 months, and final carbon and mineral type filters after 12, 18 months, depending on the type of unit. The mentioned periods are valid within the framework of normal operating rules. If the water pollution is high or the volume of use is high, these periods show variability.
